UL Jego troska o Kościół Cierpiący Zarówno nasz Założyciel jak i Odnowiciel byli mężami, którzy całkowicie poświęcili się Kościołowi, odpowiadając na jego potrzeby według sposobu w jaki je pojmowali i na "znaki czasów" tak jak je w swoim wieku odczytywali. Zwróciłem uwagę na tę wybitną cechę w życiu Arcybiskupa Jerzego w liście okólnym z 1976 r. Tu zwróćmy uwagę na głęboką troskę Ojca Stanisława o Kościół Cierpiący, o dusze w czyśćcu cierpiące. Na podstawie relacji o jego pamiętniku wiemy, że Sługa Boży Stanisław ok. r. 1675 "przejął się ogromnym nabożeństwem do dusz czyśćcowych" ("ingentem devotionem erga animas purgatorii concepit"). Jego biografowie piszą, że on nie tylko modlił się za zmarłych, ale też "ofiarowywał wszystkie swe dolegliwości, prace, prześladowania... posty, umartwienia i inne pobożne dzieła za dusze czyśćcowe". Zwykł się modlić w następujący sposób: "O najmiłościwszy Panie, powiększ moje bóle i pomniejsz ich - tzn. dusz w czyśću cierpiących - męki" ("O piissime Domine, auge mihi dolores et ipsis poenas minue!"). Zauważmy ciekawą rzecz, że Ojciec Odnowiciel wzywa nas do tej samej praktyki. "Ergo, ora, frater, et labora afflictions". His personal example, a model to be imitated in our apostolic zeal and activity, compels us to be ever mindful of"... the simple, the poor, the emarginated to be evangelized and brought the benefits of the faith". HI. His concern for the Church Suffering Both our Founder and Renovator were men deeply dedicated to the needs of the Church, as they conceived those needs, and reading the signs of the times, in their respective day and age. We have already dwelt on this conspicuous trait of the life of Archbishop George in our circular letter of 1976. Father Stanislaus' deep concern was for the suffering church, the souls in purgatory. We know from some notes based on his memoirs, that the Servant of God Stanislaus towards 1675 "conceived an enormous devotion towards the souls in purgatory" ("ingentem devotionem erga animas purgatorii concepit"). And his biographers write that he not only prayed for the dead, but also "applied all his infirmities, labors, persecutions... fasts, mortifications and other pious works to the souls in purgatory". He was want to pray: "O most gentle Lord, increase my sufferings and diminish their - i.e. that of the suffering souls - pain" ("O piissime Domine, auge mihi dolores et ipsis penas minue!"). It is interesting to note that we are exhorted by Father Renovator towards the same practice "Ergo, ora, frater, et labora pro fidelibus defunctis, offer pro illis opera poenitentiae, tui abnegatio-
