drawing souls to The Divine Mercy not only during her short earthly life, but above all in eternity, for she wrote: I am perfectly aware that my mission does not end with death, but will begin. O doubting souls, I will draw aside for you the veils of Heaven to convince you of God’s goodness, so that you would no longer continue to wound with your distrust the Sweetest Heart of Jesus. God is Love and Mercy (Diary, 281). For this reason, a comprehensive biography of Sister Faustina becomes in a certain sense a necessity. Challenges and Promises The human heart is capable of attaining selflessness; but in this human heart there are so many desires — even very lofty ones — and at the same time there is so much helplessness, that it eagerly looks around for someone who would willingly come to its aid. Our Savior is well aware of these two peculiarities of the human heart. That is why time and again He appeals to the most noble selflessness. More often, however, to provoke us to action, He appeals to the human heart with a promise of help. This is exactly what He does to encourage us to spread the devotion to The Divine Mercy in our own hearts as well as in the hearts of our neighbors. Jesus is well aware of the spiritual poverty of every soul, of the great misery of humanity today. He knows that except by turning to The Divine Mercy, neither the individual soul nor mankind will be healed. At the same time, His Most Sacred Heart is so filled to overflowing with this mercy that He suffers torment when He cannot pour out its healing streams upon human hearts — and He cannot, because they do not turn to mercy for them; they do not want to accept it.
