Pillars of Fire In My Soul
whose inhabitants He wants to bestow His Mercy. Both the hands of Jesus also serve the idea of mercy. The left hand points to the bosom, to the Heart — namely, to the source of mercy; it ushers us into His very “heart of hearts”. The right hand, moreover, the Savior raises on high 9 — not to threaten and punish, but to bless yet more lavishly from now on those who will have recourse to His mercy. And what are we to say of the white garment without a cloak? — for that is the way Our Lord appeared to Sister Faustina. Is it to be a symbol of purity of heart which mankind, infected by godlessness and contaminated by immorality, needs so badly? It may be so, and the interpreta- tion is plausible. But a different thought comes to mind. Doctors and nurses attending the sick put on white garments as a sign that they are ready to serve and to heal. And so, the Lord’s white tunic can be a symbol of His great readiness to heal ailing humanity by means of His mercy. 10 In the expression of the face and eyes of the Savior there should shine through the fatherly seriousness that sadly beholds erring humanity; but there should also shine through the fatherly Love that takes pity on it and is ready to gather it to Its Merciful Heart. So that no one should be uncertain as to what sentiments this image is to inspire in souls, it should bear the inscription, Jesus, I Trust in You . Our Lord was speaking of just such an image when He said to Sister Faustina: I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature: “Jesus, I trust in You ” (Diary, 327). Divine Mercy … We Trust in You! 41
