1115 ??? Introduction Panegyricus Augustissimo Principi Michaeli Korybuth (PPM) was written on the election of the Prince Michael Korybut Wiśniowiecki as King of Poland, which occurred on June 19, 1669, in Warsaw. By means of this panegyric, the Piarists hoped to gain the new King’s favorable regard for their Institute. Father Papczyński mentioned in some other document this “Panegyric offered to the venerable King of the Polish Majesty, on behalf of the Warsaw College (...) on the fifth day after the happiest election”4. Source, Time of Composition and Author The work’s full Latin title is: Panegyricus Augustissimo Pricipi Michaeli Korybuth Divinitus Electo Regi Poloniae, Lithuania, Russiae, [...] Magno Duci, debitae subiectionis et observantiae causa a Regio Collegio Varsaviensi Clericorum Pauperum Matris Dei Scholarum Piarum Consecratus. The title page does not name the author because – as Papczyński explained – his superiors from the Institute of Pious Schools “forbade me to put my name on the Panegyric offered to the venerable King of the Polish Majesty – although our Constitutions so dictated.” Father Papczyński confirmed his authorship of PPM in his Apology, stating “the Panegyric written by me […] for His Majesty King Michael immediately after his election and sent to press with due censorship.”5 During King Michael’s election, Fr. Papczyński stayed in Warsaw, where he enjoyed great repute as a speaker. No wonder that this kind of task was entrusted to him. In a manner similar to PPM, Fr. Papczyński presented his impressions from the coronation of King Michał in the work Christus Patiens6, which is undoubtedly of his authorship. Fr. Papczyński’s 4 Cf. below, Apologia, in Scripta Historica, § 53. 5 Ibid., § 23. 6 See above, Christus Patiens, Discursus IV.
