He then left for Moscow, where he served as pastor for 23 years at the St. Louis Church. After the funeral rites were completed for him in Moscow, his body was transferred to Marijampolė, and then brought to the family plot at the cemetery in his native vil- lage of Virbalis, where he is buried. In 2001, Father ANTHONY ŁOŚ (Wos') died in Góra Kalwaria. He was a respected vocation director, educator, and house superior. After the fall of Communism, he reclaimed closed monasteries and churches in his native Belarus, particularly in Druya and Rosica—the place of martyrdom of BlessedsAnthony and George. He is buried in Góra Kalwaria. A ugust 24 On August 24, 1997, Father FRANCIS RACIUNAS died of cancer in a Kaunas hospital at the age of 78. He was born in 1919 and entered our Congregation at 17. He was ordained a priest in 1943. Arrested by the Communists in 1949, he spent almost 20 years in exile in Siberia. Having returned from exile, he worked in different parishes (also among students) and researched the history of the Church in Lithuania. For many years, he directed the clandestine formation of candidates for priesthood. In the early 1990s, he ministered at St. Louis Church in Moscow. From 1989 to 1996, he was the provincial superior in Lithuania. His funeral Mass took place at St. Gertrude Church with five bishops in attendance. He is buried in the Petrasziuna cemetery in Kaunas. A ugust 26 On August 26, 1778, Father LUKE CZARNIEWSKI (Char-n'ef-ski) died at the Marijampolė monastery at the age of 52 after a long illness. Among other offices, he fulfilled that of president of the monastery and novice master. He was highly regarded as a “truly religious man.” He is buried in Marijampolė. In 1819, Father VICTOR WOŁĄGIEWICZ (Vo-won-gevich), Vicar General, died at the age of 66 at the monastery in Marijampolė. He was a religious for 46 years and a priest for 43. He was president of the Marijampolė monastery for 38 years, during which he supervised the stonework construction of the monastery. He also collected materials and started the construction of a new church, which, however, was left incomplete at the time of his death. During the last eleven years of his life, he served as civil councilor of peace and justice. He was the first to be buried in the crypt of the church in Marijampolė.
