Sister Faustina Kowalska: Her LIfe and MIssion
best-educated of all those whom S is te r F au s tina knew, a Professor a t th e Gregorian University in Rome. Many years la ter, he gave an account of the impression th a t her confession made upon him: "Of those attending the retreat there was also Sister Faustina, about whom I knew nothing, not even her name. She came to confession to me, to receive the sacramental grace, and advice for the immediate future. What she said to me, and the way in which she spoke, made me convinced that I was meeting a soul truly chosen by Christ. She gave me the impression that she was a "saint" (I use the term without any wish to pre-judge the objective state o f affairs). "Although during more than th irty years o f pastoral life I have met many souls o f great sanctity, never - except in one other case - have I had a sim ilar impression o f the holiness o f the person w ith whom I spoke... M y conviction was the result o f observing in her soul a combination o f mystical gifts, the confident intimacy o f her soul with Jesus, w ith unusual simplicity in the manner o f her interior life and her a ttitude to everyday matters. I was extremely edified, encouraged in my soul, and interiorly overjoyed. My respect for a Congregation to which Jesus had entrusted such a treasure was increased." The two following accounts by p riests refer to S ister F au s tina ’s time in Vilnius. The f irs t of these is related by then superior, Mother Borgia: "When once, after a long period o f absence, one o f the priests who gave us retreats came to Vilnius (this was the Jesuit, Fr. Dubaj), S is ter Faustina asked me to accompany her, for she wished to go to confession to Fr. Dubaj. Shortly afterwards, Fr. Dubaj was about to leave and I met h im in our grounds. He sa id to 454
