Sister Faustina Kowalska: Her LIfe and MIssion
So the aim itse lf of the d iary has basically changed. The sphere of its eventual reade rs has g rea tly in creased. Now i t is no longer destined for h e r confessor alone, b u t has become one of th e in s trum en ts of S ister Faus tina ’s apostolate. "January 23, [1937]. I d id not fe e l like uniting today. c.Tfen I heard a voice in my souk ,(My daughter, you do not hue fo r yourself, hut fo r souds; unite fo r their Benefit.'' (Diary, Notebook II, para . 895). Je su s’ words of a sim ilar import occur on more than one page of h e r Diary: "‘The Lord Jtimsetf moves me to unite prayers and hymns ahout Mis mercy, and these hymns o f praise force themsetves upon my kips. I have noticed that readyfo rm ulated zvords o f praise o f Qod’s mercy enter my mind, and so I have resolved to unite them dozvn in so f a r as is zvithin my pozver. I can f e e l Qod urging me to do so." (Diary, Notebook VI, para. 1593). This is why, despite he r failing streng th , despite obvious difficulties a t times in formu la ting he r thoughts, S ister F au s tina does not stop writing. The tone of h e r u tterances takes on fresh expression. They have become one g re a t hymn in praise of the Divine Mercy. At one moment words of adoration spring to h e r lips, a t ano ther she offers Je su s h e r sufferings in exchange for th e salvation of sinners, absorbed in seeking the lost sheep of the Lord. Her adoration now more often takes the form of verses. One has the impression th a t in the harmony of rhyme and rhythm she can most fully express h e r own inner harmony, which is seeking language to be able to manifest itself. 308
