have mercy on us and on the whole world.” (Diary, 476) Such was the origin of the Chaplet to The Divine Mercy. It teaches us many things: namely, 1) that human malice brings down divine punishment upon the world; 18 2) that heavenly spirits take part in the carrying out of these punishments; and this, 3) that the entreaties of a saintly soul exert a great influence in warding off divine chastisement if that soul appeals to Jesus Christ, to His Passion. Just how pleasing this devout practice is to Our Lord is attested to by the promises He made known through Sister Faustina: Oh what great graces I will grant to souls who will recite this chaplet! Write down these words, My daughter. Speak to the world about My mercy; let all mankind recognize My unfathomable mercy. Priests will be offering it to sinners as the last security when all else has failed ... I desire that the whole world know about My mercy. I desire to give unimaginable graces to those who trust in My mercy (Diary, 687) . Sister Faustina herself came to be convinced of the great efficacy of this Chaplet to The Divine Mercy on a number of occasions, but especially whenever she applied it for the souls in Purgatory, and, even more so, when she recited it for the ben- Divine Mercy … We Trust in You! 49
