III. THE PERSONALITY OF SISTER FAUSTINA It is no wonder then, that so many have the great desire to learn something more about her whom the Savior Himself is said to have called to be a special confidante of His mercy, to whom He gave the commission to proclaim this devotion that is not only necessary for mankind, but, in the present times, is absolutely indispensable to it. We shall try to satisfy these valid desires fully somewhat later in a more comprehensive biography, in which we shall describe in greater detail the inte- rior life of Sister Faustina, her relations with heaven, and her mission to be “the apostle of The Divine Mercy.” Exterior Personality Helen Kowalska, known as Sister Maria Faustina in religion, was born in the village of Glogowiec, Poland, on August 25, 1905. At age 20 she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy (popularly known as the Magdalen Sisters), which devotes itself chiefly to the educa- tion and training of girls morally and financially impoverished. Accepted into the “second choir”, she spent her postulant year [initial training] in Warsaw, and two years of novitiate in + agiewniki near Cracow, where, too, she pronounced her first annual vows on April 30, 1928, and her perpetual vows — Divine Mercy … We Trust in You! 31
