remission of sins to the dying if the Chaplet to The Divine Mercy is recited at their bedside: “if others recite it at the side of the dying, then the latter will receive this same grace of remission. When this Chaplet is said at the side of the dying, the wrath of God is appeased, and unfathomable Mercy encompasses the soul” (Diary §811). The third of the special promises complements the preceding two; it is intended for the dying and concerns the temporal aspect of dying, both when recited by the dying persons them- selves, as well as when recited by others at the bedside of the dying. In revelation 66 the Lord Jesus says: “When hardened sinners recite this Chaplet, I will fill their soul with peace, and make happy the hour of their death” (Diary §1541). In the same revelation, Jesus directed a promise to all souls who will ven- erate The Divine Mercy: “They will experience no fear at the hour of death. My Mercy will shield them in this final strug- gle.” In revelations concerning the Devotion “venerating The Divine Mercy” means “having trust in it.” For this reason, if the Chaplet is to guarantee a peaceful and truly happy death, it is necessary to express internal trust in The Divine Mercy. The fourth special promise widens the promise of this same grace of reciting the Chaplet at the bedside of the dying: “When this Chaplet is prayed at the bedside of the dying, I will place Myself between the Father and the soul of the dying person, not as a just judge but as a merciful Savior (Diary §1541). The practical conclusion issuing from these great promises is self-evident: As long as the dying person has the ability to recite the Chaplet orally, let him do so. If he can no longer speak, let those keeping vigil at the bedside of the infirm person continue the prayer until the moment of death. Jesus himself directs the following appeal to priests: “Let priests present this Chaplet to sinners as a last resort” (Diary §687). We are all sinners as a result of the first fall.
