From the VAULTS The passage of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court nearly 50 years ago did not go unnoticed in Marian Helpers Bulletin, the precursor of Marian Helper. In the April-June 1973 edition, “Father Joseph, MIC” (Br. Robert Doyle, MIC), urged readers to protest by writing to President Richard Nixon and their congressmen. “We know that the purpose of government and its laws are to protect and defend its citizens, but today our highest court of law in our land says it is all right to kill an unborn child up to six months of pregnancy. On the other hand, it does protect from death those who have with full intention killed other people,” Fr. Joseph wrote. “Where are our Christian people who allow such things without even raising their voices? If the unborn are allowed to be killed, next it will be the aged, the sick, the deformed and eventually various groups of people much as the tyrant Hitler was doing.” In the next edition, Anne O. Nemus pumped up the volume. “America, you are not free!” she said. “Your citizens are being slaughtered in the womb, and you are making laws to sanction the same.
