71 In this ancient Basilica of St. Mary Major, everything speaks of the presence of Mary Immaculate in the life of the Church, in the life of this city and in the life of every disciple of Christ. It is a presence that attracts the faithful, a maternal presence that invites them to kneel down to pray and open their hearts to Mary. Inside these ancient walls, the words of Christ’s testament spoken from the Cross to the beloved disciple have resounded for 16 centuries: “Behold your mother” (Jn 19:27) – the same words Christ addresses to each of us today. Christ entrusts each of us to his Mother today: “Behold your son.” St. John, having heard these words, “took Mary into his home” (Jn 19:27). From an encounter with Mary, one never returns alone! So take Mary with you for the days of intense work ahead of you at the General Chapter. Entrust to Her all the tasks and challenges that face your Congregation. Today, look into Her eyes in a filial way, and may this look of the Mother, which reaches you from this ancient icon, accompany you during these days. A mother’s gaze directed at her sons has a special power: it touches the heart, is capable of restoring lost hope, and gives energy and power to transform lives. We all need this gaze full of tenderness, compassion and maternal concern so much. My wish for you is that this gaze of Mary Immaculate accompanies you during your General Chapter, that you let yourself be guided by her during these days. Salus Populi Romani – ora pro nobis!
