our rescue. He was one of the first to promulgate sweet bondage to the Immaculate Mother of God. He trusted that anything given into her care would never perish. He knew the needs and complaints of people of all social levels. A man of prayer, he was sensitive to the matters of this earth. Prayer did not block out reality. On the contrary, it made his heart more sensitive to the difficult situation of the oppressed people. By this, he meant farmers first of all. Father Casimir saw people toiling the soil, and, like Christ, drew examples from their lives. He saw the misery of the peasants. He felt the injustices and injuries suffered particu- larly by the people toiling the land. He understood the importance of the farmers’ work and wanted it to be under- taken in love and freedom. Therefore, he fought for the freedom of those who worked toiling the soil. Father Casimir’s zeal and love reached beyond the bor- ders of his homeland. In his desire to strengthen Christ’s Kingdom and to spread devotion to Mary Immaculate among other nations, he reached Portugal where, unfortu- nately, he soon died at the age of 55. A lively memory of his saintly life survives there as is evidenced by the pil- grimages to the tomb of the Servant of God in Balsamao and by the requests for the speedy beatification of the “saintly Pole.” It is our desire that our society, too, should become acquainted with this light which shone in the dark epoch of the Saxon rule.
