The idea of sending a letter to all the bishops in Poland was considered, but given up as it might have painfully offended those bishops in whose dioceses there were no such abuses. On May 8, 1753 the Nuncio wrote to the Secretary of State giving him more detailed information. The abuses mentioned earlier were practiced primarily in the dioceses of Gniezno, Cracow, Kujawy, Pozna<, P=ock, and +uck. In answer to the intervention of the Apostolic Nuncio, special edicts were printed and published in particular dioceses. The copies of these edicts were sent to Rome. On May 5, 1753, Pope Benedict XIV turned to the Apostolic Nuncio and encouraged him to write special let- ters to the bishops in whose dioceses the abuses regarding confessions were discovered. The Holy Father was going to send a letter to all the Polish bishops about the matter. When the letter from the Nuncio was read to the Pope in Castel Gandolfo on May 28th , he renewed his intention of sending a personal letter to the Polish bishops. It is not known whether such a letter was ever sent, because it has not been found in the Vatican Archives.
