Father Wyszy<ski freed himself from Father Salazar with the help of two persons, Salvador Marcel de Figueiredo y Sylva, a landowner and the king’s courtier, and John of God of the Immaculate Conception ]Joao de Deus da Conceicao\, who had also made attempts to found an order in honor of the Immaculate Conception. The two of them obtained from Cardinal Melchior Tempi, the Apostolic Nuncio, a safe conduct letter, by the power of which Father Wyszy<ski was placed in a Reformati monastery of St. Peter of Alkantara in Lisbon, thus freeing him from Father Salazar. Father Casimir could finally begin to put into effect the plans which had brought him to Portugal in the first place. Soon after he had arrived at the Reformati monastery, John of God of the Immaculate Conception was vested with the white Marian habit on March 25, 1754. This first Portuguese Marian was instrumental in establishing the Marian monastery in Balsamao. Knowing about the existence of St. Francis tertiaries at the local sanctuary of the Blessed Mother, Fr. Casimir decided that they might join the Marians. He wrote a letter about the matter to the Bishop of Miranda, John of the Cross, a Carmelite, including information about the Marians and a picture of their Founder. In his reply of July 1, 1754, the Bishop wrote to Father Casimir : I received the letter and memorial of Your Reverence regarding the project of founding this new 49 THE SERVANT OF MARY IMMACULATE
