them the best possible conditions. They soon found out that they had been deceived. They learned that nobody at the royal court or any person of note in Portugal had ever thought of a foundation for the Marians. The whole affair proved to be a ruse of Father Anthony de Souza Salazar who had himself tried to found an order of the Immaculate Conception. His efforts to do so had brought no results thus far. When he learned from the Franciscans about the existence of the Marians of the Immaculate Conception, he decided to bring them to Portugal to realize his own plans. The Marians from Poland were only to be a tool in Salazar’s hand. He treat- ed them very badly, insulted and humiliated them, and thereby experienced their humility and sanctity. Father Benon Bujalski became seriously ill and decided that it was imperative that he should return to Poland. When his health allowed, he set out on his journey on December 26, 1753, to return home by land. Father Wyszy<ski decided to remain in Portugal. In his letter of June 13, 1754, he wrote to the Superior General of the Marians in Poland : As Father Benon left for Poland on December 26, 1753, please let me know whether he has arrived. Following Father Benon’s depar- ture, I had to break with Father Salazar because I could not arrange anything with him regarding the promotion of our Order. The Lord God, however, gave me protectors who, from Father Salazar’s hand, almost by force, opened for me a way to better promote our Order. Foundation in Portugal 48
