Nursing with the Hands of Jesus

Patience, Meekness, Humility &Smile Saint Faustina tells us: “I have learned that the greatest power is hidden in patience. I see that patience always leads to victory, although not immediately; but that victory will become manifest after many years. Patience is linked to meekness”(1514). Meekness is the gentleness with which the nurse treats patients. It flows from the presence of Jesus acting within the heart of the nurse, so the nurse is more understanding and willing to address the physical and pastoral needs of the patient. Out of humility, nurses should recognize the truth that all good and healing comes from God and they should thank God in every situation. A Nurse for Divine Mercy recognizes that talents and abilities come from God and are given for the good not only of self, but for others because God gives them special abilities and strength. He also guides them in patient care, helping them to make the best possible treatment choices for their physical and spiritual needs. Nurses can bring the sick and dying person the light of hope and divine healing through their smile. Our care of the sick and the dying can bring them closer to God, or further away from Him, depending on our disposition of heart. Many souls are already ravaged by suffering; we must not increase their suffering with poor nursing care. The nurse can bring help and happiness when s/he shares their hopes and fears. S/he can also facilitate bringing the love of Jesus and Mary into patient care. Pray how not to be indifferent to the patients’ needs, no matter how demanding they may be.
