The Immaculate Conception “Mary is given to us as the masterpiece of God’s mercy, as she whose primary role is to have us enter through the narrow and royal door of the Father’s mercy.”9 “Our Lady is the fullest recipient of the Father’s acts of mercy towards His adopted children in Christ, especially manifested in the great mysteries of the Immaculate Conception, the Presentation, and the Annunciation. Our Lady is an indispensable ingredient in the mystery of Christ. She is part of God’s wonderful plan to pour out His mercy upon the world through the maternal mediation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.”10 “Because of Mary’s singular cooperation with the action of the Holy Spirit, the Church loves to pray in communion with the Virgin Mary, to magnify with her the great things the Lord has done for her, and to entrust supplications and praises to her”(CCC, 2682). We are able to “introduce” Our Lady to our patients by wearing her Miraculous Medal. It is surprising how many patients and their visitors react in a positive manner toward a religious emblem worn by a nurse. By this means, our Lord’s mother is made present in the midst of the sufferers. She is known to bring her Son along with her, for she is the dawn that ushers in the Light of Life wherever she appears. Our Lady, who was at the foot of the Cross of her dying Son, is a perfect example of patience and compassion in suffering and will assist us with patient care. Let us not be afraid to turn to her for everything. Jesus, who suffered for our redemption, and Mary, who shared in His suffering, understand the sufferings of our patients. They will help us to unite our sufferings with the sufferings of Jesus Crucified. 53
