John Paul II points out: “The message of Divine Mercy is also implicitly a message about the value of every human being. Each person is precious in God’s eyes; Christ gave his life for each one; to everyone the Father gives his Spirit and offers intimacy”(Homily 4/30/2000).6 Peace that flows from Jesus, Our Merciful Savior is more than a simple freedom from conflict, war or oppression. It is, above all, a Divine Gift of His loving presence. When we accept Him with faith and love, and trust in Him, His very presence offers us abiding peace, security, and powerful protection. His loving presence fulfills our deepest longings and needs, especially of being unconditionally loved, accepted, forgiven, healed, and provided for. This Divine Gift can be best expressed and understood through the image of an infant resting in its mother’s arms — secure, warm, nourished, loved, and provided for in all its needs. Surrounded by God’s loving kindness, we can be at peace, as infants in the arms of a mother. The Divine Mercy message provides the Healthcare Professionals with a spirituality that enriches, refreshes and consoles the heart with new forms of devotion, spiritual insight and prayer. In addition, by its emphasis on sacramental life and a life lived in a deep communion with God, it leads them to the inexhaustible and regenerating source of hope, peace, and healing. Eucharist and Eucharistic Spirituality The Eucharist is the most preeminent source of inexhaustible spiritual regeneration, hope and healing. Our Lord Jesus instituted the Eucharist at the Last Supper when He offered His Body and Blood as an atoning sacrifice for our sins, established a New Covenant, and commanded us to do so in His memory. 39
