Sister Faustina Kowalska: Her LIfe and MIssion

Of the th ree priests, only the la s t two can be called sp iritual directors in the full meaning of the word, to whom S ister Fau s tina subm itted h e rse lf with absolute obedience. This was in fact a special situa tion , for in regard to both confessors she had the assurance of Je su s th a t she had received them to he lp in the realisation of h e r singular vocation. Rev. T. Czaputa passed almost unnoticed through the life of S ister Faus tina , and she h e rse lf appears not to appreciate the role he played. Bu t it was he who had guided h e r through the mystical nights. Having no doubts th a t th is was a soul whom God was purifying in a special m anner, he also had no personal inh ib i tions about directing h e r du ring th is difficult time, and so he did no t to rm en t h e r additionally by any mention of h is own uncerta in ties. We do not, i t is true , have his own direct account, b u t in the extensive re te lling of the events of th is period in S is te r F au s tina ’s Diary we learn th a t th is priest calmed h e r in h e r sp iritual to rm en t and fortified her, assu ring h e r categorically th a t she was on the righ t path. I shall say little about Fr. Andrasz and Fr. Sopocko, because I have dealt with them exhaustively in other chapters. Fr. Andrasz from his f irs t contact with h e r in con fession recognized the divine action within the soul of S ister Faustina , and did no t draw back from the pastoral duty with which God as p resen ting him. He gave h e r exact and detailed instruc tions as to he r behaviour, so th a t she should not waste these God-giv en graces. He m a in ta ined the same a tt i tu d e every time th a t S ister Faustina , when she was in Cracow, came to him as a penitent, regardless of whether th is was a single occasion or whether he was to be a perm anen t confessor. He never drew back from offering h e r the necessary counsel. 452
