She had every r ig h t to speak thu s , no t only to rem ind he r h e a re r of the basic Gospel message, b u t because she h e rse lf was the b e s t example of its tru th . When she worked in the kitchen, especially a t the convent in Plock, where the kitchen was really a corridor of communication leading from th e ga te to the inner depths of the convent, she never pro tested or scolded when th e gatekeeper s is te r w en t from one end to the o ther in answer to th e reques ts of those waiting a t the gate. The opposite was the case, for she always h ad a kindly unders tand ing for th e gatekeeper, and was ready on h e r p a r t to give all possible help, as is recalled by S is te r F.P.: "To everybody she was kind ... I f anyone asked her for something, she never refused, and was ready to give any service which was not in conflict w ith her duties. When once she was to work in the store-room as Keeper o f the Larder, she asked to be excused saying, "Please, Mother, don ’t p u t me there, because I ’ll give everything away. I can’t control myself, when anyone asks me for something." 447
