MATURING TOWARDS SANCTITY The words of Je su s to S is te r F au s tin a directly after the a ttack of suffocation in V ilnius, when He told her th a t she had no t ye t fulfilled th e ta sk en tru s ted to h e r on ea rth , s tim u la ted h e r to still g re a te r concentration on the mission she h ad received. H er a t t i tu d e of watchfulness and care, which directed all h e r free thinking-tim e to the problems which faced th e work of Divine Mercy, did not lessen h e r longing for etern ity , for the meeting with God face to face, w ithou t th e veil h iding Him he re on earth . She did, however, with all the s treng th of h e r will, make th e longing subordinate to active love, for S is ter F au s t in a wished ju s t as much as to fulfil the wishes of h e r beloved Lord, as to see Him in heaven. Her desire to please Him was stronger th an all others. This is why, in h e r meditations and prayers, the theme of h e r own death does not appear un til the end of 1936, when she w en t to hospital, and even then death is a periphera l m a tter. Nevertheless h e r loving h e a r t wanted, sometimes, to dream . I t is too h a rd to give th is up, and S ister Faus tina , am id s t h e r apostolic activity in th e hospital, sometimes sighed: W e know each other mutuady, O Lord, in the dweding o f my heart, fe s , now i t is I who am receiving yo u as a Quest in the titthe home o f my heart, hut the time is coming when y o u w i d cad me to f o u r dweding 11 Sister 321
