change in the sp iritual life of S ister F au s tina up to this time. She writes of i t with h e r customary frankness: 'IFor many years [Jesus] fiimsetf educated me, untiC t fe moment when die gave me a spiritual director. (Previously, IHe himseif had made clear to me what I d id not under stand; hut now, (He tetts me to ask. my confessor ahout everything and often says, I zv ill answer you through his mouth. <Be a t peace. I t has never happened to me that I have received an answer which was contrary to wha t the Lord wanted o f me, when I presented it to the spiritual director [Fa ther Sopocko]. I t some times happens that Jesus f ir s t asks certain things o f me, ahout which no one knows anything, and then when I kneel at the confes sional, my confessor gives me the same order - however, this is infrequent.' (Diary, Notebook I, para. 145). The process of adap ta tion was experienced quickly and w ithout upse t by S is ter Fau s tina , although - as we shall see - Fr. Michael Sopocko subm itted h e r to hum ilia ting observation. Constantly streng thened by Jesus , once having en tru s ted herse lf to h e r confessor, she was able to uncover h e r soul to him w ithout difficulty and she followed his direction in everything. She was, after all, well drilled in "holy" religious obedience - Je su s H imself had tau g h t i t to h e r - and now she possessed a new kind, higher, th e "holy" obedience to h e r sp iritual director. Let us leave S is ter F au s tin a a t th e threshold of having h e r inner life p u t into order. Let us allow he r to recover from her firs t impressions, to become used to the certa in ty of having found a safe haven. We shall tu rn our a tten tion to the o ther p a r tn e r in th a t unusua l Divine "adventure", F a the r Sopocko. I t does no t often 154
