S ister F au s tina knew Vilnius. She had been there four years before, as a rep lacem en t for help in the kitchen. In comparison with the Cracow convent, i t now seemed to h e r to be small: th e re were 18 S isters and some wards. Among the sisters , w ha t a joy it was to find th ree who were known to h e r from earlier years in th e convent: S ister Felicia Z., S ister Ju s t in e G., and S ister Fab iana P. Also, the Superior was the same as in 1929, Mother Irene Krzyzanowska, kindly and understand ing , and S ister F au s tin a had g re a t confid­ ence in her. Her main fear was no t over the necessity of adap ting herse lf once more to the requ irem en ts of a new su r ­ rounding and the style of life there , nor awe of new religious superiors, the more so as she now knew th a t she was no t obliged to tell them everything about m a tte rs concerning h e r soul. F a th e r Andrasz had explained what needed to be said to superiors and what was for the confessor alone. Her p resen t problem was confined, in reality, to the question of the choice of a suitable confessor. Where would she be able to find one? Je su s H imself solved the problem. J u s t as He had promised in Cracow before h e r departu re , He did not leave h e r alone. Fu rthe r , He a rranged a surprise for her: S ister F au s tina did not need to seek a confessor. At the f irs t Sa tu rday confession she made, she recogn­ ized the p r ie s t in the confessional as th e one who had been shown to h e r twice before by Jesu s , the chaplain whom He had designated to be h e r sp iritua l director, and who was also to help h e r in th e accomplishment of the ta sk the Lord had se t her. This was F a th e r Michael Sopocko, th e new chaplain to the S isters in Vilnius, who had been assigned to them a bare six months before. 148
