M y soul was... inundated zvith such happiness that I cannot p u t in zvriting even the smallest part o f it... I was extraordinarily fu s e d zvith (jod. (Diary, Notebook I, paras . 135-7). A new intimacy therefore took place between S ister F au s tin a and God. God, hav ing accepted h e r consent to join with Him sacrifice for sinners , from now on leads h e r ever deeper into the essence of th is relationship , and develops in h e r the ability to consecrate he rse lf w ithout reservation . We know th a t although the community in which S ister F au s tin a lived did not observe traces of selfishness in he r , overcoming h e r own ego did no t always come easily to her. Many p a r ts of h e r Diary show this. She was helpful, k ind and gene rous, b u t how many times she complained to Je su s of ing ra titude or th e though tless or selfish use th a t others made of her, or of h e r own lack of strength! Jesu s never left h e r b i t te r complaints w ithout a reply. He explained the very essence of sacrifice, He commended to h e r a perseverance and a to ta l lack of self. Barely a 139
