Pillars of Fire In My Soul
Nor did these devotions stop when the war ended. They still keep drawing not only the local people but also a good number of “pilgrims” from Cracow itself. After the devotions, held in + agiewniki chapel, groups of the faithful often proceed to the convent cemetery where lie the remains of Sister Faustina. 4 Through her intercession, they beg for divine mercy for themselves and those dear to them. They also commend to her intercession the fate of Poland, the Fatherland so dearly loved by Sister Faustina. II. RESERVATIONS CONCERNING THE DEVOTION Looking at this somewhat rapid growth, one finds it difficult to deny the impression that “the finger of God” is indeed here. To be sure, with some people reservations arise: Why multi- ply new devotions, new images and new practices? Are not the existing ones more than enough? Others are fearful of illusions. Indeed, before this new devotion, or rather this new form of it (for the devotion to The Divine Mercy is as old as humanity itself) receives final approval, it must undergo a very strict examination. We do not wish to anticipate the final decree of the Holy See as regards both, the devotion itself, and the won- derful, “miraculous” events in the life of Sister Faustina. For a great number of followers of the devotion to The Divine Mercy, precisely in this form, a principal support for it — alongside other justifications — will be the opinion of the experienced theologian Fr. Hyacinth Woroniecki, former professor and rector of the Catholic University of Lublin. Not too long ago there appeared in print his erudite study entitled The Mystery of The Divine Mercy . In the Introduction, this is what the author has to say about the devotion: Divine Mercy … We Trust in You! 29
