Divine Mercy ... We Trust in You! When the new devotion to The Divine Mercy — or rather, the old devotion to The Divine Mercy in a new form — was still in its embryonic stage, a leaflet entitled “Jesus, I Trust in You” was being circulated among the faithful. After the turmoil of the Second World War ended, this devotion made significant headway among our people, so that now, at the urgent request of many, we are bringing out this booklet entitled “Divine Mercy... We Trust in You.” I. GROWTH OF THE DEVOTION TO THE DIVINE MERCY This devotion began to spread even before World War II, but quietly, in certain closed circles. The first time a fringe of this devotion made a public appearance was in 1935, in Vilnius, when the new Image of The Divine Mercy was placed in the Shrine of Our Lady of the Eastern Gate as part of the festal decorations on the occasion of the celebration of the closing of the Great Jubilee — the observance of the 1900 th Anniversary of Redemption. It was during the three-day religious services marking the closing of the Jubilee Year that Father Sopocko, Sister Faustina’s confessor in Vilnius, taken into confidence about this devotion at the Lord’s command, delivered sermons on the immensity of the Mercy of God and on the Merciful God’s desire that people turn to Him with great trust.
