in his book was a big inspiration. But I also think it was my own relationship with St. Joseph that blossomed after my consecration, which inspired me to draw him in the way you see in the novel. I have been approached by multiple people who have said that my depictions of St. Joseph reminded them of a loving father. No matter how you relate to him, as a friend or father, I hope that these depictions will help you to go to him more. You draw many other saints and blesseds in the novel who were devoted to St. Joseph, such as St. Peter Julian Eymard and Blessed Basil Moreau, and illustrate holy places such as Knock, Ireland, and Zeitoun, Egypt. My depictions of the saints, blesseds, and places were based off of real photos or illustrations I was able to find online. Although I drew them in my cartoon style, my goal is to always try my best to retain the dignity of such holy people and places. Growing up, I was influenced by secular comics and cartoon shows. I would often draw the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Batman, which were very popular at the time. Once I started learning more about my faith and saints, like St. Maximilian Kolbe and St. Joan of Arc, I thought, “These are the real superheroes!” It was then that I started drawing the saints more than the fictional comic-book characters. For me, their stories are essential for us to learn, not just because they have amazing abilities, but because we should strive to be like them, by the grace of God. Your depiction of Fr. Calloway (left) is amazing. How challenging was that? Ha-ha! Well, unlike St. Joseph, Fr. Calloway’s character took some time. After about 100 sketches in, I felt like I was finally satisfied with something. I sent some sketches to my mom, who is a fan of Fr. Calloway, and she gave some more suggestions for changes and additions. So it took a bit of time, but I think it looks like him! And I think he likes it!
