When Fr. Donald Calloway, MIC, attended the red-carpet Hollywood premiere of Jesus Thirsts: The Miracle of the Eucharist, the new Jim Wahlberg-produced documentary in which he and Fr. Chris Alar, MIC, make an appearance, it brought back memories of another gala premiere, 36 years ago. On April 19, 1988, Divine Mercy — No Escape had its East Coast premiere at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. “America’s First Lady of the Theater,” Helen Hayes, who narrated the film, was in attendance, as well as actress Melanie Metcalf, who played Sr. Faustina. “The world of stage and screen ordinarily have little to do with the world of cross and consecration. In American culture they usually stand opposed to each other,” wrote Fr. Gerald Ornowski, MIC (pictured above with Helen Hayes), in the summer 1988 edition of Marian Helpers Bulletin. This was not the case with Divine Mercy — No Escape. “Not only has the genius of modern cinematography been put at the service of a religious message, but the people of religion and the theater have had to relate.
