Bioethics controversy addressed The 10th Annual “Medicine, Bioethics, and Spirituality Conference,” sponsored by Healthcare Professionals for Divine Mercy, an apostolate of the Marian Fathers, will take place Wednesday, May 7, and Thursday, May 8, on the campus of the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass. A highlight of the con- ference will be Dr. Scot Bateman addressing end-of- life care in “Turning Off the Vent: Preparing the Family, Patient, and Staff.” Drawing on his many years of expe- rience as division chief of Pediatric Critical Care at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, he will apply bioethical principles to discern the highest stan- dards of care for critically ill patients near death. “Our annual conference has become well known as a forum for discussing and examining the most urgent bioethical concerns facing healthcare profes- sionals today,” says Marie Romagnano, RN, founder and director of Healthcare Professionals for Divine Mercy. “We integrate the best of medical science with bio-medical ethics, pastoral care, Judeo-Christian revelation, and Divine Mercy spirituality in addressing these concerns. This integrated approach gives our healthcare professionals a unique educational and spiritual formation that can, and is, transforming the way many of them care for their patients.” The Most Rev. Robert McManus, Bishop of Worcester, will again chair the panel discus- sion. This year, the panel will discuss “Faith and Reason in Service to the Sick and Dying.” Speakers include Fr. Mark Yavarone, OMV, PhD, professor of bioethics at the Blessed John XXIII National Seminary; Dr. John Howland; Dr. Ron Sobecks, hematologist/oncologist at the Cleveland Clinic and author; Bryan Thatcher, MD, director of Eucharistic Apostles of The Divine Mercy; Sr. Nazareta Maleta, OLM, member of St. Faustina’s order, the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy; Fr.
