In the meantime, the church was almost completely abandoned and it was only occasionally that some priests would celebrate the Mass there. For these reasons, Father Wyszy<ski engaged Peter Pruski, the attorney, to obtain this church for the Marians. But all of this information proved to be erroneous. Not only hadn’t the Basilians abandoned this place, they did not intend to sell the church, either. The Franciscan broth- er mentioned earlier took Father Wyszy<ski to another church, one belonging to the Brotherhood of Saddlers, but again, they were unsuccessful. It was, therefore, a great joy for the Procurator General of the Marians finally to be received by the Holy Father, Benedict XIV, at an audience on November 29, 1751. During this audience he presented the present situation of the order to the Holy Father, he discussed the matter of Father Turczynowicz, he asked to obtain special indul- gences and relics, and submitted three memorials, one of which regarded the settling of the Marians in the Eternal City : ]the Holy Father\ discussed the matter with me and when I told him that we did not have a place to live here in Rome, he said : “Look for the place and we will help you.” When I mentioned to him the church of Santa Maria in Navicella, he said : “You are doing the right thing, I approve and give my blessing” and he patted me and 43 THE SERVANT OF MARY IMMACULATE
