Having finished school in G[ra Kalwaria, Francis con- tinued his studies at another Piarist school, this time at their college in Warsaw. He distinguished himself with his piety, but experienced a lot of difficulty with his studies. His father, who dreamed of a political career for his son, was not pleased with this. Since his father treated him badly, Francis decided to go on a pilgrimage to Rome, just like St. Stanislaus Kostka had done a long time before. He set out on this journey without his parents’ knowledge. When Francis’ mother learned about his escape, she sent her son Michael to look for his brother. Francis had already traveled 70 kilometers. He returned home for the sake of his anxious mother and because of his brother’s promise to obtain their father’s for- giveness. Indeed, his father showed him a lot of kindness and allowed him to continue his studies in Warsaw. Upon finishing school, Francis began to work at the chancellery of the town of Warsaw in accordance with his father’s wish to prepare himself for a future career. But he was not certain whether this was to be his way of life. For reasons unknown to us today, he made a vow to undertake a pilgrimage to the tomb of St. James of Compostella in Spain.
