71 Apostolate or Contemplation: 1677-1723 and Bishop Wierzbowski resulted in the latter granting permission to establish the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Warsaw. However, this plan was not realized due to the prevailing plague and various wars at the time.49 As an expression of the bishop’s goodwill, protection, and concern for the development of the Marian Order, his official letter dated May 22, 1681, granted them support and privileges. He also consented to the foundation of a church and monastery in Warsaw at Leszno, Grzybów, or Solec. Additionally, he allowed them to administer sacraments (except for Baptism and Marriage), preach sermons, teach, and conduct fund-raising.50 Unfortunately, many of these possibilities were not realized. The obstacles were a lack of approval of the Order, external enemies, internal opponents, poverty, and strong competition from new and active religious orders settling in Warsaw. Canonical Erection of the Congregation of Marian Fathers; Efforts to Obtain Approval from the Holy See The year 1677, as we have already discussed, was very favorable for the congregation. The approval of the Marian Order by the Sejm, new holy vocations, and the opening a new establishment in Góra strengthened Father Papczyński’s conviction of the chosen path’s righteousness. He interpreted these facts as God’s blessing for the Order and the works undertaken. Consequently, he initiated efforts to obtain the canonical erection of the Marian Order, a cause that Bishop Stefan Wierzbowski also urged. By accepting the Marian Fathers, he obligated them to seek the approval of the institute from the Holy See.51 He also wanted to ensure that Fr. Papczyński’s activities were inspired by the Holy Spirit 49 Wyszyński, Stróż, 7, p. 158. “From this unwavering conviction of the holiness of Father Stanislaus, it also follows the permission of the local ordinary to establish the chapel of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Warsaw, the capital of the Kingdom of Poland, as attested in the records of the Warsaw Consistory. However, Casimir Wyszyński did not specify the year in which this permission was granted. 50 Positio, Papczyński, pp. 410-411. 51 “Quos tamen obligamus, ut Instituti Sui Confirmationem quantocius a Sancta Sede Apostolica postulent, quatenus, quod a Nobis agitur, a Spiritu Sancto profectum esse censeatur, neque plus nobis arogasse, quam Authoritas Nostra valeat, iudicemur”.
