MARIANS IN 1670-1788 114 task.187 It’s difficult to explain why they didn’t attempt to solve this tough situation by expanding the monastery. Perhaps it was due to the indecisiveness of the general superiors or the entrenched belief in the “poor Marian hermits,” which they were cautious to challenge. Between 1750 and 1757, the general’s office was held by Fr. Cajetan Wetycki. He was a pupil of Fr. Wyszyński, a fervent religious and one of the most distinguished leaders of the Marian Order. On the very first day after his election, he ordered renovations to be carried out for the convenience of the Fathers in the monastery and the cloister in Goźlin.188 It’s difficult to ascertain today whether the renovations took place and what their impact was, but the conditions didn’t change significantly. Three years later, in 1753, he issued another order to the superior in Goźlin to renovate the cells he specified, especially the library and study room.189 Probably, the Father General’s requests didn’t yield the expected result. In 1754, under his leadership, the General Chapter issued two more official decrees, one concerning Góra and the other concerning Goźlin. The first ordered the relocation of the toilets from the farm area to the cloister courtyard for the convenience of the religious and to maintain enclosure, especially during the night.190 The second decree categorically ordered the expansion of the monastery in Goźlin because the Fathers were experiencing significant discomfort living three or four in a small cell, and the lack of proper living conditions was deemed unfair to them. The Chapter also ordered the construction of eight small cells with access to the garden, especially intended for studying clerics and religious brothers, and loca secreta (toilets). Having learned from the limited effectiveness of previous decrees on this matter, this time, they decreed that in case of task non-compliance, the superior would be removed from office and receive a penalty of suspension.191 The acting superior was to gather all necessary materials in that same year and complete the construction the following year. 187 Ibid, 1728, pp. 78-79. 188 Ibid, 1750/43. 189 Ibid, 1753/13. 190 Ibid, 1754/20. 191 Ibid, 1754/21.
