S TANISLAUS P APCZYNSKI 194 judgment. I humbly bend my knees before His goodness as I offer my prayers for you. Please, do the same for me, so that He might forgive us, as we ask His forgiveness for one another. And should He want to punish us, for He is just, may He do it here [on earth], rather than somewhere else.” 157 At the Monastery Prison in Prievidza The news of Fr. Papczynski’s abduction reached the Bishop’s Curia in Cracow on the same day. 158 Soon after Br. Bernard Krupski, an eyewitness to the abduction, prepared a written account of the whole incident and later gave Fr. Papczynski its draft copy. 159 When the news from the Piarist residence reached the Curia, Ordinary An- drew Trzebicki was probably away, for it was only on February 16, 1670, that he wrote a letter to Provincial Superior Opatowski, in which he defended Fr. Papczynski and expressed his indignation at such a disrespect for the bishop’s authority. He demanded that Fr. Stanislaus be returned to Cracow due to the fact that he had placed himself under the jurisdiction of the local Ordinary. 160 Opatowski, who had made so many efforts to put Fr. Papczynski out of action, did not intend to meet the bishop’s demand. In order to be able to act more freely, he transferred Fr. Stanislaus to the Pi- arist monastery in Prievidza in Hungary, thereby removing him from the area under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Cracow. The scenario was similar to the one before — two soldiers again accompanied the prisoner in a covered cart. Father Stanislaus was to remain in Priev- idza until a response from the Superior General, releasing him from the Piarist Order, should come. Meanwhile, Fr. Opatowski contin- ued to accuse him in various houses in order to create a dislike for him among the confreres. 161 The Piarist monastery in Prievidza was their new foundation, sub- ordinate to the Polish Province at that time, 162 but located beyond the borders of the Diocese of Cracow. 163
