“Years later, I cared for a critically injured worker with a crushing head injury in the Emergency Room. Life support had just been withdrawn. The girlfriend of the dying man had just given birth to their baby, and she was screaming on the floor in shock. No Pastoral Care was available—in a large city hospital. I gathered the family around the gurney and we prayed the Our Father. I gave his girlfriend The Divine Mercy Image, and she stopped crying. After they left, I started to pray The Divine Mercy Chaplet for this dead young man. When I finished praying a sudden peace came over the room, and I understood that my prayers for his soul had been answered. “I arrived in the ICU hearing the screaming and crying of the wife of a severely injured worker on full life support, unconscious. She cried for 24 hours with children and family looking on in shock. The parish Priest had been called for the Anointing of the Sick and was at the bedside. The wife noticed The Divine Mercy pin I was wearing and in between sobs began to talk to me. Trying to console her I said: ‘Your husband has received the grace of the Anointing of the Sick.’ She replied: ‘He did not wake up for confession.’ I explained that the Sacrament of Anointing included the forgiveness of sins. Immediately, she stopped crying. “I asked if I could give her and her family and friends The Divine Mercy Image holy cards and if we could pray The Divine Mercy Chaplet for him to bring him home to Jesus. After saying ‘yes’ we prayed the Chaplet. After the Chaplet, we continued to speak about needing to trust in God’s mercy at this very difficult and painful moment.
