46 follows the Christian way of life, s/he is able to bring forth divine grace and mercy into the workplace and into the life of the patient. That is why the nurse’s spirituality and fidelity to God’s grace is so important. The effectiveness of a nurse’s ministry can be reduced by a gnawing consciousness of sin, of not being right with God. If on account of a serious sin, the nurse is not able to partake of the Eucharist, s/he is to seek forgiveness and mercy from the Lord. For Catholics, the ordinary way to receive forgiveness of serious sins is through the Sacrament of Reconciliation or confession. Reconciliation: The Sacrament of Mercy The Sacrament of Reconciliation or Penance was instituted by Jesus after His Resurrection when “He breathed on them and said to them: Receive the Holy Spirit: whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained” (Jn 20: 22-23). 1. I am the Lord your God, you shall not have other gods before Me. 2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. 3. Keep holy the Sabbath day. 4. Honor your father & mother. 5. You shall not kill. 6 & 9. You shall not commit adultery; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. 7 & 10. You shall not steal; you shall not covet your neighbor’s goods. 8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Pride, Avarice (Greed) Envy (Jealousy) Anger (Wrath) Lust, Gluttony and Sloth. Capital sins cloud conscience, corrupt judgment of good and evil and engender other sins. These need to be confessed.
