Nursing with the Hands of Jesus

Blessed Hanna Chrzanowska, RN (1902- 1973), was a dedicated community nurse. On April 28, 2018, at the Divine Mercy Shrine in Łagiewniki-Kraków, Poland, she became the first lay registered nurse to be beatified. Pope St. John Paul II, who knew Hanna well and presided over her funeral, said that she was the embodiment of the works of mercy from the Sermon on the Mount. At her beatification were: Cardinal Amato, large numbers of bishops, priests, dignitaries, nurses and midwives. The vice-postulator of Bl. Hanna’s canonization cause Mme. Helena Matoga, one of Bl. Hanna’s nursing students, carried her relics into the Shrine, followed by three registered nurses representing healthcare professionals from around the world: Dr.Gosia Brykczynska, from the United Kingdom; Geraldine McSweeney; president of CICIAMS from Ireland, and Marie Romagnano, founder of Healthcare Professionals for Divine Mercy, USA. Nurse’s Examination of Conscience by Blessed Hanna Chrzanowska, RN Part I 1. I am a nurse. I’m a Catholic. Can I say with a clear conscience: “I am a Catholic nurse”? 2. My job is not only my profession but also my vocation. I will understand more fully this vocation if I enter into and make my own Christ’s words, “I did not come to be served, but to serve.” 3. I must fulfill my vocation to the best of my ability, mindful of any family responsibilities which I may also have; performing my nursing work in a spirit of service and love. © Marie Romagnano ©Malgorzata Pabis 102
